Statement – Labor backflips on Frankston planning promise

James Newbury, Shadow Minister for Planning

27 October 2023.

The State Labor Government has backtracked on its commitment to the community of Frankston, after Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny reversed her ruling to prevent high-rise development on the Frankston foreshore.

114 days ago, the Planning Minister promised to protect the Frankston community from overdevelopment, by applying a three storey overlay limit across the Frankston foreshore.

The State Labor Government has instead today broken its promise and paved the way for massive foreshore development.

Shadow Minister for Planning, James Newbury, said: “Labor has lied to the people of Frankston, after promising to protect the community only one hundred days ago.

“More than six thousand people in the community petitioned to protect the Frankston foreshore, and the Minister has effectively ripped up the petition.

“Every community should now fear Labor’s one size fits all approach to planning and know the State Government will not honour any of the temporary height limit protections they have put in place.

“Labor’s government-led, one size fits all strategy stands in stark contrast to the Coalition’s community-led approach to planning.”
