New figures have confirmed that the Labor Government’s target to build 800,000 new Victorian homes, over the next decade, will never be achieved.
The number of new house build commencements has fallen to their lowest level since the 1990s, with only 10,582 new homes started in the three months to the end of June this year, the lowest number since 2009.
Shadow Minister for Home Ownership and Housing Affordability, Evan Mulholland said: “The Government has promised to deliver 80,000 homes every year, but doesn’t have the resources to even come close to delivering them.
“Like its promises on the Commonwealth Games, the Labor Government’s plan to build 800,000 homes over the next ten years is a con job. It simply can’t and won’t be achieved.
“The Government’s own mismanaged ‘Big Build’ is sucking up all the labour and materials required to build homes for young Victorians and migrant families.”
Shadow Minister for Planning, James Newbury, said: “The data shows the long term average of new homes built is around 46,000, with the most ever built in a single year a little over 75,500.
“On his way out the door, Daniel Andrews made a promise that will never be achieved, and walked away so that he wouldn’t be held accountable for his great big housing fib.”
