Joint Statement – Labor’s tax hikes hidden from Victorians

The Andrews Labor Government has confirmed that details of its schools, rent and jobs taxes will be kept secret and not provided to Victorians ahead of debate in State Parliament this week.

Proposed laws are always tabled in the Parliament for two weeks before they are considered to allow the community and stakeholders time to scrutinise them.

Instead, Labor’s proposed tax hikes will only be made public just before they are rammed through the Parliament.

Shadow Treasurer, Brad Rowswell, said details of Labor’s new schools tax, jobs tax and rent tax, all taxes on aspiration, are being kept secret to avoid the scrutiny that they need on behalf of all Victorians.

“Labor’s taxes punish Victorians at a time they can least afford them.”

Manager of Opposition Business, James Newbury, said Labor is refusing to release the proposed taxation changes because they don’t want any scrutiny on how they are going to punish Victorian workers, families and businesses.

“The Andrews Labor Government is now overturning the principles of integrity that underpin our Westminster Parliamentary system to hide its Budget from Victorians.”
