Statement – Labor to override community input into suburban towers

Ten communities in Melbourne will be the first impacted by the Allan Labor Government as it moves to override community input into suburban tower development.
The communities in Broadmeadows, Camberwell, Chadstone, Epping, Frankston, Moorabbin, Niddrie, North Essendon, Preston and Ringwood will be the first to bear the brunt of Labor’s reckless planning decisions, with skyscrapers of up to 20 storeys fast-tracked.
Under the new process, up to 20 storey towers will be fast-tracked within 12 months, cutting the community out of the planning process.
Shadow Minister for Planning, James Newbury, said: “The Allan Labor Government has already swung a wrecking ball through the planning and construction industry.
“Now, that same tired government that has mismanaged housing for a decade is going to swing a wrecking ball through suburbs and fast-track 20 storey apartment towers without community input.
“This is an irresponsible move by the Allan Labor Government and every community around Melbourne needs to stand up and let them know that it’s time for a change of government.
“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage housing and Victorians are paying the price.”
