Statement – Jacinta Allan breaks asbestos removal promise as Labor runs out of money

James Newbury, Shadow Minister for Environment

17 January 2024.

The Allan Government has broken another promise by refusing to fund the delivery of planned asbestos disposal safe sites across Victoria.

To date, just three of a planned eight pilot sites have been established with the future of the project in doubt following the rejection of a funding request by a government agency to keep the sites operating beyond March 2024.

The rejection of this funding request comes as Victoria’s net debt is set to reach $177.8 billion by 2026-27, more than New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania combined.

Shadow Minister for Environment, James Newbury, said: “Under Labor, Victoria is broke and important waste management projects are being cut because the government has simply run out of money.

“Asbestos is a serious health threat and by failing to deliver these promised disposal sites, local communities across the state are being placed at greater risk.

“This is yet another Labor broken promise and the consequence of the Allan Government’s financial mismanagement.”
