Statement – Land Tax Statement from the Shadow Treasurer
James Newbury, Shadow Treasurer
“It is now clear that there has been a systemic breakdown in the land tax regime in this state. These flaws span the State Revenue Office, the Valuer-General’s Office, and the unfair overarching land tax system.”
“Victorians are facing ongoing faults and failures that they are unfairly forced to bear the brunt of. These systemic issues cut the deepest because they call into question the very ownership of people’s homes.”
“Given the fundamental need for a tax system to operate with integrity, impartiality, and without systemic error, an urgent review by the Auditor-General’s Office into Victoria’s land tax regime is essential.”
Background:
- The Shadow Treasurer, on behalf of the Liberals and Nationals, has written to the Auditor-General, requesting an investigation and report on Victoria’s land tax regime.
- The request has been supported by the Urban Development Institute of Australia. Victorian Chief Executive Linda Allison has stated they are aware of “errors in calculations, incorrect land included, incorrect assumptions, and high valuations for land not deemed developable.
