Statement from the Shadow Treasurer - Jacinta Allan refuses to deny more Victorians will be hit with tax for working from home

Premier Jacinta Allan and Labor have refused to deny more Victorians will pay tax on their family home, under working from home tax rules.

When asked about the shift of the workforce to home, and the current tax settings, the Premier has refused to deny that many more Victorians will be hit with a tax bill.

The State Revenue Office rules on working from home confirm that when you conduct 30 per cent of your business at home, you will be subject to land tax, even on your family home.

By legislating the workforce into working from home 40 per cent of the time, vast swathes of the community could be subject to land tax on their home for the first time.

The Allan Labor Government has today confirmed it will not change the current land tax settings, which will mean many more Victorians will be subject to land tax.

Labor claims this is about fairness and families, but it’s really about plugging a $194 billion debt hole — with Victorians soon paying $1.2 million every hour in interest alone.

Shadow Treasurer, James Newbury, said: “We now know that many more Victorians will soon be paying land tax on their family home.

“Labor’s working from home plan is actually a working from home tax plan. By not changing the law to stop the broad imposition of tax across the new working from home workforce, we know many more Victorians will be caught in Jacinta Allan’s tax net.

“Victorians working from home should get ready for a knock at the door, as Jacinta Allan and her tax enforcers measure up your home, and leave you with a tax bill.”
