Bayside Council Must Provide Disability Access to Hampton Beach Urgently
BAYSIDE COUNCIL MUST PROVIDE DISABILITY ACCESS TO HAMPTON BEACH URGENTLY.
The Hampton Life Saving Club is a sector leader in providing inclusive beach programs and are State leading in providing access to our beach for the disabled.
A huge challenge for the Club in supporting those with extra needs is the lack of disabled parking or adequate disabled beach access. Currently there is no disabled parking nor disability compliant vehicle to water access.
For over ten years the Club has run the Starfish Nippers program, a program designed for young people of all abilities to be able to enjoy beach swimming and other beach related activities.
The Starfish Nippers program provides for young people with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, global developmental delay, Down syndrome and a wide variety of medical and intellectual challenges. It is highly successful and there are regularly over thirty participants who attend the program every week during the season.
It is time for Bayside Council to urgently:
- Provide four indented carparks along Beach Road, which would include three disabled parks and one for a designated lifesaving vehicle.
- Prioritise implementing vehicle to water, disability compliant access, via off-street parking and ramp or lift access to the beach within a reasonable distance from the Club.
