Joint Statement – Labor’s big housing build broken promise

The Allan Labor Government is putting the $216 billion Suburban Rail Loop ahead of young Victorians and families in growing suburbs in desperate need of a home.
On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the Labor Government’s Housing Statement – which committed to building 80,000 new homes a year over the next decade – just 55,653 houses have been built.
Polling released today shows that Victorian voters preference housing over the SRL and think it will hamper efforts to build more homes.
Shadow Minister for Home Ownership and Housing Affordability, Evan Mulholland, said: “There is no point having an expensive train tunnel in the eastern suburbs when people cannot even get a roof over their heads.
“You can’t live in a tunnel, and you can’t raise a family in a tunnel and it’s clear that once again the dream of home ownership in Victoria is being ignored by Labor.”
Shadow Minister for Planning, James Newbury, said: “Jacinta Allan and the Labor Government promised to deliver 80,000 homes each year over the next ten years. Victorians know that Labor has broken their promise.
“Since committing to increase housing, the number of homes delivered has gone backwards – which only proves that the Labor Government has made the housing crisis worse.
“Today’s polling shows that Victorians know the State Labor Government has failed them and that Jacinta Allan has the wrong priorities for the State.”
