Constituency Question - Hawthorn Road Safety

CONSTITUENCY QUESTION

‘HAWTHORN ROAD SAFETY’.

My constituency question is to the Premier, and I ask: when will the Premier overturn his Labor Government’s longstanding decision not to improve safety on Hawthorn Road in Brighton East?

Local residents have longstanding concerns about pedestrian safety near Melbourne Montessori College in Brighton East.

Students, parents, teachers and local residents regularly need to cross Hawthorn Road, which is a busy state-controlled road.

There is currently no convenient, safe pedestrian-operated crossing near the school. The nearest signalised crossing is hundreds of metres away.

Last year a young student was struck by a car while crossing the road outside the school. Thankfully the student’s injuries have healed, but it is proof that the danger is real and our children are not safe.

The school, the community and I have advocated for improved pedestrian safety to the State Government for many years and been ignored.

The community is calling on the State Government to urgently install a pedestrian-operated signalised crossing near Melbourne Montessori College.

The community is also calling for any other traffic improvements that could make the area safer.
