Statement – Protecting Port Phillip Bay’s natural amenity

22 August 2022.

A Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will provide $10 million for the development of a comprehensive erosion plan for Port Phillip Bay.

As part of the plan, funding will be provided to undertake studies at locations around Port Phillip Bay where erosion is a critical problem.

The study works will consider the natural environment as well as marine biodiversity issues and will allow for appropriate solutions to be identified and planned.

Shadow Minister for Bay Protection, James Newbury, said the worsening erosion along Port Phillip Bay had been a long-term matter of great community concern.

“This is a serious issue and we must preserve our fragile coastlines so they can be enjoyed now and into the future.”

“Instead of peddling the problem for another day, the Liberals and Nationals will make a start on this urgent project straight away.”

Member for Sandringham, Brad Rowswell, said fixing coastal erosion on our Bayside foreshores shouldn’t be as complicated as it currently is.

“I’m determined to work with our community to invest in renourishment, streamline the process and preserve our magnificent coastline for this generation and the next.”

“Recent costal erosion in Sandringham, Black Rock and Beaumaris reminds us of the ongoing need to do so.”

Liberal Candidate for Nepean, Sam Groth, said we must preserve our fragile coastlines so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.

“This commitment from the Liberals and Nationals will deliver a desperately-needed solution to ensure locals and visitors will get to enjoy everything Portsea, Blairgowrie and Dromana beaches have to offer.”

Liberal Candidate for Mornington, Chris Crewther, said that the Liberals and Nationals want our children and their children to be able to enjoy Port Phillip Bay.

“Only a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will lead the way to restore the iconic Port Phillip Bay, including the Mt Martha North, Hawker, and Shire Hall beaches.”
