Joint Statement – Liberals protecting the residents of Brighton

Every Victorian has a right to be safe in their home and a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will deliver that for the Brighton community.

The Liberals and Nationals will deliver a new police station shop front in Brighton. The new shop front, based in a central shopping strip, like Church Street, will ensure that Brighton has access to police services when the community needs it.

Over recent years, Brighton, Brighton East, and Hampton have been victim to patterns of crime. Most recently, Brighton has seen a spike in aggravated burglary. Hampton has been subject to on-going car break-ins, and last year, a number of shocking crimes occurred in a Brighton East Park.

The community has said loud and clear the decision by the former Bracks Labor Government to close the Brighton Police Station was wrong. A future Liberals and Nationals Government will restore that critical service for the Brighton community.

Shadow Minister for Police, Brad Battin, said this commitment is an important step towards providing the Brighton community with a policing service.

“A Brighton police shop front will become an integral part of the community, decrease incident response times, play an important part in reducing crime, and increase community protection,” Mr Battin said.

“The Liberals and Nationals have real solutions to ensure crime prevention and the safety of communities in Victoria.”

Member for Brighton, James Newbury, said the community strongly support a local police presence.

“The Brighton community has been victim to disturbing incidents of crime. We need to improve safety and crime prevention measures in our local community,” Mr Newbury said.

“A new police shopfront, in a busy shopping strip like Church Street, will be a gamechanger for Brighton, Brighton East, and Hampton.”
