Joint Statement – Delivering modern facilities to give Brighton students the very best start

Students at Brighton Primary School will finally be able to learn and grow in modern classrooms under the Liberals and Nationals’ plan for a better education in Victoria.

A Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will provide Brighton Primary School with $9 million to begin transformational improvements to the school, including a multipurpose library, STEM, arts facility, and the development of a masterplan for future works.

The current demountable buildings, which half of students are still forced to use, were installed next to a train line in the 1970’s and are no longer fit for purpose.

These issues are intensified for those with hearing impairments attempting to learn in loud and unsuitable environments.

Our children deserve better, and getting started on stage one will deliver much needed upgrades now while allowing the school to work towards a vision for the future.

Shadow Minister for Education, David Hodgett, said this investment is an important recognition of the role the school plays in Brighton.

“Brighton Primary deserves to be recognised for the role it has played in teaching children since 1875, and so we will step up and begin the transformational improvements that the school deserves,” Mr Hodgett said.

“The Liberals and Nationals have real solutions to support Victorian students though new and upgraded facilities right across the state.”

Member for Brighton, James Newbury, said the Brighton community strongly support the school upgrades, which are long overdue.

“The last time the school had meaningful infrastructure improvements some fifty years ago, Victorians were wearing flares,” Mr Newbury said.

“Labor has overlooked Brighton Primary School for far too long. Our commitment will back the teachers and students at the school to continue doing what they do best.”
